Handelsstadt, Industriestadt, Messestadt, Wendestadt, Hypestadt – Leipzig hatte und hat viele Gesichter, die Konstante ist der Wandel.
In seiner als „Stadtbilder“ bekannt gewordenen Serie dokumentierte der in Weimar ausgebildete Stadtplaner und seit 1984 als freier Fotograf tätige Ulrich Wüst in den frühen 1980er Jahren in präzisen Schwarzweiß-Fotografien die Entwicklung ostdeutscher Städte zwischen Aufbruch des Neubaus ganzer Siedlungen und Stagnation des Verfalls der Innenstädte.
Der in Leipzig lebende Fotograf und Gestalter Christian Rothe indes dokumentiert seit vielen Jahren in scharfen Kontrasten den jüngeren Wandel Leipzigs von einer Stadt im Werden zur gehypten Metropole zwischen Clubkultur und Weltgeschehen.
Die Ausstellung zeigt erstmals die fast 50 Jahre umfassende Spanne beider fotografischer Positionen in einer gemeinsamen Gegenüberstellung. Dabei verbinden sich bekannte Ansichten der Stadt mit individuell beobachteten Momenten zwischen Stadtlandschaft und Zeitgeschichte.
Anlass der Ausstellung ist das Buch „Taxi nach Leipzig“ des Leipziger Architekten Gunnar Volkmann, für das Christian Rothe Fotografien beigesteuert hat und das bei M BOOKS erschienen ist.
A city of commerce, a city of industry, a city of trade fairs, a city of transformation, a city of hype – Leipzig has had and continues to have many faces; the one constant is change. In his series known as “Stadtbilder” (Cityscapes), Ulrich Wüst – an urban planner trained in Weimar who has worked as a freelance photographer since 1984 – documented the development of East German cities in the early 1980s through precise black-and-white photographs, capturing the contrast between the construction of entire new housing estates and the decay of city centers. Meanwhile, Leipzig-based photographer and designer Christian Rothe has for many years documented, in sharp contrast, Leipzig’s recent transformation from a city in the making into a hyped metropolis caught between club culture and world events. The exhibition presents, for the first time, the nearly 50-year span of both photographic approaches in a joint juxtaposition. In doing so, it combines familiar views of the city with individually observed, even casual moments situated between urban landscape and contemporary history.
The exhibition accompanies the book “Taxi nach Leipzig” by Leipzig-based architect Gunnar Volkmann, published by M BOOKS, to which Christian Rothe contributed photographs.
