La Fábrica, Ricardo Bofill

La Fábrica ist eines der ikonischsten Werke von Ricardo Bofill. Die ehemalige Zementfabrik am Stadtrand von Barcelona, die er zufällig während einer Autofahrt entdeckte, wurde zum Mittelpunkt des Lebens des verstorbenen katalanischen Architekten und diente ihm seit 1973 sowohl als Wohnhaus als auch als Hauptsitz seines Architekturbüros. Hier schuf Bofill seine eigene Welt, indem er die Betonformen unter jahrelangem Staub und Rauch freilegte, die Natur wieder in das Gebäude zurückkehren ließ und die Balance zwischen seiner monumentalen Größe und einer zarten, menschlichen Sensibilität feinabstimmte – eines der frühesten Beispiele für die Wiederverwendung eines Industriegebäudes, das sich noch immer im Wandel befindet.

Diese Ausgabe erweitert das ursprünglich 2018 veröffentlichte Buch um exklusive Archivbilder, die von RBTA zur Verfügung gestellt wurden, sowie eine umfangreiche Auswahl von Fotografien, die Nacho Alegre bei seinen Besuchen in La Fábrica in den letzten zehn Jahren aufgenommen hat. Im November 2022 kehrte er zurück, um das Gebäude in seinem aktuellen Zustand zu dokumentieren, und schließt das Buch mit 32 Seiten bisher unveröffentlichter Bilder – ein Porträt von Bofills geliebtestem Werk in einem Moment tiefgreifender Veränderung. Das Buch enthält eine Einleitung von Pablo Bofill sowie ein Interview mit Ricardo Bofill selbst, geführt von den in Barcelona ansässigen Architekten Arquitectura-G und Guillermo López, eine erweiterte Version des Gesprächs, das ursprünglich in Ausgabe Nr. 11 des Magazins Apartamento veröffentlicht wurde.

La Fábrica is one of Ricardo Bofill’s most iconoclastic creations. A former cement factory on the outskirts of Barcelona, serendipitously discovered while driving, the building became the centre of the late Catalan architect’s life, serving both as his home and as the headquarters of his practice since 1973. Here, Bofill created a world of his own, exposing the concrete forms from beneath years of dust and smoke, encouraging nature back onto the structure, and fine-tuning the balance between its monumental scale and a delicate, human sensibility, in one of the earliest examples of the reuse of an industrial building — and it’s still changing.

This edition expands on the book Apartamento originally published in 2018, featuring exclusive archival imagery courtesy of RBTA and an expansive selection of photographs taken by Nacho Alegre on his visits to La Fábrica over the last decade. He returned in November 2022 to document the building in its current state, closing the book with 32 pages of otherwise unseen images — a portrait of Bofill’s most cherished work at a moment of profound transformation. With an introduction by Pablo Bofill, the book also features an interview with Ricardo Bofill himself by Barcelona-based architects Arquitectura-G and Guillermo López, an extended version of the conversation originally published in issue #11 of Apartamento magazine.
