Christian Rothe: Buchenwald. Im Dickicht vom Ettersberg

Zwischen 2017 und 2024 durchstreifte der in Leipzig lebende Fotograf Christian Rothe (*1986) mit seiner analogen Großbildkamera das riesige Areal des ehemaligen Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald auf dem Ettersberg bei Weimar. Ruinen, kaum noch erkennbare Fundamente, Treppen, Zäune, Wege bilden sich wie topographische Narben und Zeichen im undurchdringlichen Dickicht ab. Was ursprünglich tastend begann, wurde für Christian Rothe zu einer intensiven Spurensuche und Bestandsaufnahme der von der Natur überlagerten Zeitgeschichte. Die Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografien treten im Buch Buchenwald. Im Dickicht vom Ettersberg in einen Dialog mit einem Gedicht von José Fosty und literarischen Passagen aus international bekannten Romanen ehemaliger KZ-Häftlinge: Bruno Apitz, Imre Kertész und Jorge Semprún. Essays des Vorsitzenden des Weltkirchenrats Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, des Herausgebers Günter Jeschonnek und der Kuratorin Andrea Karle zur Bildsprache Christian Rothes sowie der Bedeutung heutiger Gedenk- und Erinnerungskultur, ergänzen die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Zivilisationsbruch und Terror des Nationalsozialismus in unmittelbarer Nähe der Stadt der großen deutschen Dichter und Denker.

Between 2017 and 2024, Leipzig-based photographer Christian Rothe (*1986) roamed the vast grounds of the former Buchenwald concentration camp on the Ettersberg near Weimar with his analog large-format camera. Ruins, barely recognizable foundations, stairs, fences, and paths form topographical scars and marks in the impenetrable thicket. What began tentatively, for Christian Rothe became an intensive search for traces and an inventory of contemporary history overlaid by nature. In his book Buchenwald. Im Dickicht vom Ettersberg (Buchenwald. In the thicket of the Ettersberg) the black-and-white photographs enter into dialogue with a poem by José Fosty and literary passages from internationally renowned novels by former concentration camp prisoners: Bruno Apitz, Imre Kertész, and Jorge Semprún. Essays by the chairman of the World Council of Churches, Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, the editor Günter Jeschonnek, and the curator Andrea Karle on Christian Rothe’s visual language and the significance of today’s culture of remembrance and commemoration complement the examination of the rupture in civilization and the terror of National Socialism in the immediate vicinity of the city of the great German poets and thinkers.
