Ute Richter: PROTOTYP 1928–33

Die Schule der Arbeit war ein Modellprojekt der Arbeiterbildung unter Leitung von Gertrud Hermes (1872–1942). Mit dem Neubau des Architekten Johannes Niemeyer (1889–1980) entstand 1928 in Leipzig ein moderner Ort, der für das gemeinsame Leben und Lernen junger Arbeiter geplant wurde. Der Überfall durch die SA im Frühjahr 1933 und die Beschlagnahmung des Gebäudes durch die Nationalsozialisten beendeten das Bildungsprojekt.
PROTOTYP 1928–33 entstand nach umfangreichen Archivrecherchen der Künstlerin Ute Richter. Im Buch werden dem historischen Bildmaterial des vergessenen Gebäudes Zitate junger Arbeiter gegenübergestellt, um die Bildungsinhalte mit dem Raumkonzept des Neubaus zu verbinden. Aktenauszüge ergänzen Texte zur historischen Situation und zur künstlerischen Aneignung. PROTOTYP 1928–33 zeigt, was Bildung für den Erhalt demokratischer Strukturen bedeutet und verweist gleichzeitig auf ein fehlendes emanzipatorisches Projekt der Gegenwart.

The Schule der Arbeit (School of Work) was a model project for worker’s education led by Gertrud Hermes (1872–1942). With the new building designed by architect Johannes Niemeyer (1889–1980), a modern place was created in Leipzig in 1928 that was planned for young workers to live and learn together. The raid by the SA in the spring of 1933 and the confiscation of the building by the National Socialists put an end to the educational project.
PROTOTYP 1928–33 was conceived from extensive archival research by the artist Ute Richter. In the book, historical images of the forgotten building are juxtaposed with quotes from young workers in order to connect the educational content with the spatial concept of the new building. Excerpts from historic files supplement texts on the historical situation and artistic appropriation. PROTOTYP 1928–33 shows what education means for the preservation of democratic structures and at the same time points to a lack of an emancipatory project in the present.
