Wildness in the Heart of the City. Prototyping a Park – Jubileumsparken, Gothenburg

An den Piers von Frihamnen im Zentrum von Göteborg findet derzeit eine Umwandlung von einem Industriehafen zu einem lebendigen Stadtviertel statt. Der Jubileumsparken ist Teil der Feierlichkeiten zum 400-jährigen Jubiläum Göteborgs und ein Katalysator für die laufende Standort- und Stadtentwicklung und wird zu einem lokalen Ausflugsziel transformiert. Seit mehreren Jahren werden im Jubileumsparken temporäre Aktivitäten wie Bäder, Saunen, temporäre Parks und Spielplätze angeboten. Dies ist Stadtentwicklung im ständigen Dialog mit den Bürgern. Gemeinsam mit der Öffentlichkeit wurde nach und nach eine blühende Parklandschaft in einer Asphaltwüste geschaffen.

Das Buch beschreibt den Prozess und die dahinterstehende Methodik, damit andere Städte in den nordischen Ländern (und im übrigen Europa) zu einer anderen Art der Standortentwicklung finden können. Das Buch fasst 10 Jahre (2013–2023) der Entwicklung zusammen, von den ersten Prototypen bis zur Einweihung, und konzentriert sich auf Aktivitäten und Projekte ab 2016, als der Prozess an Dynamik gewann.

Mehrere Architekturbüros, Ingenieure, Experten und Künstlerkollektive haben sich an Jubileumsparken beteiligt. Viele von ihnen haben zu diesem Buch beigetragen – Raumlabor Berlin, atelier le balto, Afry, Serneke, New Order, Recetas Urbanas, Älvstranden, Polyplan und andere – und MARELD hat den Prozess zusammengestellt und koordiniert. Wie der Park ist auch das Buch ein Gemeinschaftswerk.

Wildness in the Heart of the City ist dynamisch und deckt mehrere wichtige Wissensbereiche ab – darunter Standortentwicklung, kulturelles Erbe, künstlerische Gestaltung, Parkpflege, spontanes Spielen, Bauwesen und Klimaanpassung. Es beschreibt und visualisiert, wie ein komplexer Prozess mit mehreren Akteuren aus verschiedenen Berufsgruppen über mehrere Jahre hinweg zusammenarbeitet, um einen im europäischen Kontext einzigartigen Park zu schaffen.

On the piers of Frihamnen, in central Gothenburg, a transformation from an industrial port to a lively neighborhood is underway. Jubileumsparken is part of Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary and a catalyst for ongoing site and city development, it will be a destination. For several years, temporary activities such as baths, sauna, temporary parks and play structures have been built in Jubileumsparken. This is urban development in constant citizen dialogue. A thriving park landscape has gradually been created in an asphalt desert together with the public.

The purpose of the book is to describe and summarize this unique process and the methodology behind it, so that other cities in the Nordics (and the rest of Europe) can start with a different type of place development practice. The book summarizes 10 years (2013–2023) of development, from the first prototypes to inauguration, and focuses on activities and projects from 2016 onward when the process started to gain momentum.

Several architectural offices, engineers, experts, and artist collectives have participated in Jubileumsparken. Many of these contribute to the book – Raumlabor Berlin, atelier le balto, Afry, Serneke, New Order, Recetas Urbanas, Älvstranden, Polyplan and more – and MARELD compiles and coordinates the process. Like the park, the book is also a joint work.

Wildness in the Heart of the City is dynamic and covers several important areas of knowledge – including site-building, cultural heritage, artistic design, park maintenance, spontaneous play, construction, climate adaptation. It describes and visualizes how a complex process with several actors from different professional groups collaborates over several years to create a unique park in the European context.
